Self-Care in Toledo, OH
I moved to Toledo, OH from a very small town in Michigan (meaning the nearest Target was a 45 minute drive) in 2018 and I was THRILLED with all the things I could do here. I’ve talked to a lot of Toledo natives since I’ve moved here and it seems that not everyone shares my enthusiasm for what Toledo has to offer. I get it; when you grow up in a place it’s hard to see it with fresh eyes. So, this blog post is a hard sell for all my favorite self-care activities in Toledo with the hope it will inspire even the most skeptical among us.
Visual self-soothing at the Toledo Art Museum. In my last blog post, we discussed how we can regulate our emotions using our senses for self-soothing. I love going to the Toledo Museum of Art, specifically to look at their Impressionist collection. These works are gorgeous and provide a great opportunity to slow down and look at beautiful things.
Physical self-care at the Metroparks. This might feel obvious but our metropark system is really very lovely. One of the newest metro parks is Glass City Metropark. Per the Metropark’s Instagram post, Glass City Metropark will have cabanas to reserve beginning on June 12. Sounds like a pretty fun way to spend a summer afternoon.
Social self-care at a local coffee shop. Grabbing a coffee or tea with a friend at one of our local coffee shops is a fun way to connect to local businesses and your friends. My favorites include Maddie and Bella, Sip, and Dollop Shop.
Mental self-care at the library. It is no secret that I love to read and the Toledo Public Library system is fantastic. Learning new things or getting engrossed in a fictional world is a great way to care for your mind. You can get a library card online and have access to digital material through the (free!) Libby app. The downtown branch is beautiful (visual self-care!) and also has a cafe inside. The SAME Cafe is donation based non-profit that provides healthy food to all, regardless of their ability to pay.
